Poker is a card game where players place bets against one another. The player to the left of the dealer position puts in a small bet called the small blind, and the person to his or her right places a larger bet called the big blind. Each player then receives two cards, known as hole cards. The player can either call the bet, raise it or drop out of the hand altogether.
Usually, before the first round of betting starts, the players are required to make an initial amount of money into the pot. These bets are called forced bets, and they come in the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins. Players also purchase poker chips to play with. Typically, a white chip is worth one unit of the minimum ante or bet, while a red chip is worth 10 units or more.
Once the players have placed their bets, the dealer shuffles the cards and deals each player a hand. The cards can be dealt face-up or face-down, depending on the game rules. After the deal, the first of several betting rounds begins.
After each betting round, 5 community cards are dealt, and the players can now try to make a winning poker hand from their two individual cards and the five community cards. The best poker hand wins the pot. In the event of a tie, the dealer wins.
