What Is Worldwide Update?

Every year, Verizon Wireless offers a Worldwide Update to their lineup of phones. It is a service that lets customers that have purchased a Verizon phone in one country but use it in another enjoy all the same features and benefits as if they were still on the Verizon Network. If you ask me, I think it is a great deal and a good benefit for the consumers. If you ask me, I think it is a bad deal for the carriers and the phone manufacturers.

Many people are under the impression that once you purchase a new Verizon phone, you automatically receive a worldwide update (and you shouldn’t). This is not true. Only some phones are made by Verizon and through the yearly Verizon update program, they can provide the latest technology to their customers. Other phones are more generic and only offer some of the features that Verizon offers. If you have a Verizon prepaid or postpaid phone, you won’t see a Worldwide Update because it isn’t made by Verizon.

It is important that you do some research into your service provider if you don’t already have a Verizon phone. You might find that you are still on an “old” network. Some service providers like AT&T or Verizon are now trying to force customers to stay with their carriers even though they no longer offer the specific services that they did. This can be very harmful to the consumer’s benefits. If you currently have a Verizon phone, I recommend switching to a carrier that offers worldwide coverage and a variety of calling plans that will allow you to make low cost international calls. You will even save money on your phone bill.
